I am a cyclist. In cycling, as odd as it sounds, having a good team around you is critically important if you want to perform at your best. Team members not only encourage you and challenge you to go faster, but they also can ride in front of you, or alongside you, and block you from the wind. You can save maybe 20% of your energy if a teammate blocks the wind. Then you can emerge from behind their protection and come across the finish line a winner.
In my new role as Director of Innovation Lab, I can see that I’m going to be coming across that line a lot as a result of my team. They’ve just put together a proposed process for helping the agency capture, explore, and develop innovative ideas. They’ve done a terrific job, sifting through good ideas and bad ideas; in effect, making my job 20% easier than it might have been. Very cool.
